Fundraising Tips

8 GivingTuesday tips for nonprofits.

August 1, 2023

Use these impactful tricks to reach your donors on #GivingTuesday.

Giving Tuesday is all about being radically generous for a day, while teaching and encouraging everyone to be a little more generous everyday. And, do to that, nonprofit organizations need to use Giving Tuesday not just as a fundraising tool but also as an opportunity to teach. Interacting with your supporters and sharing your mission on Giving Tuesday will likely result in a few new long term donors and volunteers.

There are so many ways to get supporters (new and old) involved with your cause and keep them excited about giving to your nonprofit long after Giving Tuesday is over.

Tip no. 1: Customize your nonprofit’s image for the day.

Create a version of your nonprofit’s logo just for GivingTuesday. It will show supporters that you believe in the good GivingTuesday is spreading while making it clear that your nonprofit is participating.

Free design software like Canva make it easy-ish to adapt your logo or add the GivingTuesday logo.

Tip no. 2: Let your donors know your nonprofit will be taking part in GivingTuesday.

If your donors don’t know your nonprofit will be participating in GivingTuesday, how can they support you?

In the weeks leading up to Giving Tuesday let your donors, members, volunteers and supporters know what your nonprofit organization will be doing for GivingTuesday.

Send out an email or two, mention #GivingTuesday in your newsletter, post on social media with images of you preparing for the day, and ask your supporters how if they’ll be participating in #GivingTuesday.

Tip no. 3: Encourage your donors by offering different ways to participate in GivingTuesday.

You definitely want to share your main campaign page to collect as many donations as you can, but be sure to give other options such as signing up to volunteer, donating items, spreading the word about your charity, or participating in the event.

Tip no. 4: Get your nonprofit ready by using the resources GivingTuesday provides.

True to its roots, everything Giving Tuesday makes is free for nonprofits (and anyone really) to use. And, nonprofits should use it all. They provide toolkits for your campaign, images and great ideas on how to make the most of the day.

Tip no. 5: Reach out to local businesses and ask them to spread the word or sponsor your nonprofit.

Is there a donut shop nearby that has a huge Instagram following? A sporting goods store that normally sponsors your nonprofit’s events? Ask them to share your graphics and support your mission on #GivingTuesday. They could set up a table at your event, bring a food truck, or donate some time or money to your cause.

Tip no. 6: Let donors be the voice of your nonprofit.

When it comes to attracting new donors and encouraging existing donors to give, there is nothing quite as powerful as stories.

Ask your donors to share why they support your cause and then be sure to re-share those stories in your emails and social media posts. (Remember to include a clear call-to-action so people know where to click and how to do their part.)

Tip no. 7: Use the #GivingTuesday hashtag in your nonprofit’s social posts.

This will probably come as no surprise, but Giving Tuesday does has an official hashtag! Well, two really.

So, don’t be shy! Boost engagement by using the official hashtags. The GivingTuesday hashtags get billions of social media impressions every year. Make sure your organization’s campaign is among them!

Tip no. 8: Take donation form personalization up a notch.
